DTU Nutech, the Radiation Physics Division, is seeking candidates for a PhD position to develop a new instrument for accurate small-field dosimetry in radiotherapy. The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of dosimetry, luminescence physics, and neutronics, with applications within e.g. geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy, radiation processing, radiation protection and nuclear emergency preparedness. The division presently consists of approx. 35 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students. Background Cancer patients are increasingly treated with highly conformal, individualized radiotherapy delivered by megavoltage x-ray beams from medical linear accelerators. Hospitals therefore increasingly need accurate measurements that can quantify and verify doses associated with small radiation segments. However, the current measurement procedures available for small radiation fields at hospitals are not standardized and different results will be obtained with different detectors. The source of the problem is that some of the assumptions underpinning clinical dosimetry in conventional large fields break down for small fields. Job description The aim of this PhD is to contribute to the design and testing of a special instrument based on calorimetry that is not subject to the short-comings of the commercially available detectors currently used at hospitals. The standard will allow the physical dose in a small, well-defined test volume of graphite to be deduced on the basis of temperature measurements. The standard can therefore provide accurate, traceable reference values such that correction factors for commercially available detectors can be directly measured in DTU’s well-defined accelerator beams. The candidate will focus on modelling, instrument design, measurements and uncertainty analysis. Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to have a master’s or equivalent degree in medical physics, engineering or experimental physics. Prior experience in medical physics, metrology, or computer modelling of radiation transport or heat flow would be an advantage. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
