Postdoc in Life Cycle Assessments of Energy Conversion Technologies

In DTU Energy we want to strengthen our efforts in assessing life cycles of materials and processes used in future energy conversion and storage technologies. New technologies to secure supply of energy and energy services in the future sustainable energy systems become more and more important in light of the ongoing shift from fossil to sustainable primary energy sources. One aspect of this technological transition is that entities and authorities responsible for providing the energy and services need assessments of environmental impacts as well as use of resources associated with the new technologies. We are therefore looking for a motivated postdoc to work in DTU Energy´s Section for Energy Systems and Analysis aiming to meet these challenges. Responsibilities and tasks You should assess the environmental impacts of using new technologies - primarily based on relevant standards – and a central part of the work will concern hydrogen technologies (electrolysis and fuel cells). Important parts of the work on specific technologies will be comparisons focusing on not only CO2 but also other impact categories such as non-renewable energy depletion, human toxicity, respiratory effects etc. An analysis of business models for ownership and operation of electrolysis plants will be part of the work, considering capital and operational costs for various scenarios. Finally, a societal impact analysis using social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) methodology will be included considering a number of impact categories (human capital, cultural heritage and human well-being) and stakeholders (workers, local community, society, consumers, and value chain actors). Initially the work will be part of an EU research project "Building Innovative Green Hydrogen systems in an Isolated Territory: a pilot for Europe" (BIG HIT) which involves large scale demonstration of hydrogen production by electrolysis on the Orkney Islands. Our new employee will be part of a broad scientific environment working both experimentally and theoretically to develop new energy technologies able to secure the future sustainable energy system. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, systems analysis or similar. A solid background in Life Cycle Assessments will be required and past experience should be documented in your application. Insight in energy conversion processes (e.g. materials and energy balances) and relevant standards will be expected. You should be able to work independently, to plan and carry out complex tasks in a large, dynamic research environment. It is highly important that you are open-minded and hold social competences allowing you to communicate effectively in speaking and writing with a wide spectrum of project stakeholders. Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken are required.
