Do you want to help shaping innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future? The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is among the world’s research leaders in key-Energy and Environment technologies such as fuel cells, solar cells, electrolysis for production of synthetic fuel, flue gas purification, liquid filtration, thermoelectric, and magnetic refrigeration. For all these technologies, a fundamental aspect is the processing of materials and new challenges are open to design devices with new functionalities and shape, often resolved in the nanometric scale. The department is seeking for two qualified PhD students to explore new processing potentials, using versatile processing techniques, respectively inkjet/3D printing and electrospinning. Responsibilities and tasks We need to develop novel shaping techniques to fabricate ceramics or composites with very complex microstructure for energy devices in very specific applications. Inkjet printing Offers a great potential for low-cost and materials-efficient alternatives for manufacturing functional materials drop-by-drop and layer-by-layer using nanomaterials and sol-gel chemistry. This especially allows assembling with high precision complex shapes and architectures, enabling exciting progress in printed electronics and energy devices. Electrospinning Can uniquely produce tailor made hierarchically porous structures from nanofibers with well-designed composition, pore size distribution and high surface area. These fibrous structures will be developed for gas storage/separation and have large potential for use in many other applications, such as water filtration. The successful development of these techniques requires the integration of single layers into multilayers and control of the post-shaping processes. Successful control of the design and desired final microstructure with high resolution on the nano- and microscale depends very much on the inner properties of the initial material in suspension (ink or slurry). A main purpose of these PhD projects is the formulation and implementation of functional suspensions of inorganic materials for the manufacturing of components and devices with advanced performance, including fundamental aspects in the chemistry, stability, rheology of suspensions, and their interrelation. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering. •Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science and engineering or similar •Experience with experimental methods for material processing and characterization (surface properties, porous and dense structures, interfaces…) will be beneficial •Experience in colloidal chemistry and suspension stabilization studies will be beneficial •Prior knowledge in the area of energy conversion devices/water filtration devices will be beneficial •Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group •Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
