Postdoc in Microbiological Risk Assessment using Next Generation Sequencing Data

Infectious diseases are the direct cause of more than 20% of all human deaths each year. Human disease and foodborne outbreaks are devastating to both local and global health and the economy. Quantifying the different risks will allow better control and more appropriate use of the enormous amount of resources used to combat infectious diseases each year. DTU Food invites applications for a Post Doc position in Microbiological Risk Assessment using Next Generation Sequencing Data. The Post Doc will be affiliated with the team of epidemiologists and risk modellers in the research group for Genomic Epidemiology, which also includes scientists working with microbiology and bioinformatics. Research in the group is focused on the evolution, epidemiology and persistence of infectious agents, including zoonoses, antimicrobial resistant bacteria and food and waterborne transmitted pathogens. Responsibilities and tasks The Post Doc project is part of a large Horizon 2020 research project called COMPARE (http://www.compare-europe.eu/) aiming to speed up the detection of and response to disease outbreaks among humans and animals worldwide through the use of next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. The aim of the Post Doc project is to integrate the outcome of NGS into risk assessment focusing on foodborne pathogens. The specific objectives are: •Developing a generic framework for food chain Risk Assessment using Next Generation Sequencing data. •Performing case studies applying the framework using data and knowledge obtained within the COMPARE project. •Developing a prototype for a software tool to allow for rapid risk assessment on the basis of NGS data. •Contributing to the development of risk-based sampling of food Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Further qualifications: •A solid background in stochastic mathematical modelling, preferably through documented experience in quantitative microbiological risk assessment. •Knowledge of or experience in interpreting and analysing WGS (whole genome sequencing) data from infectious microorganisms will be an advantage, but not a requirement. •Excellent communication skills are crucial to create consensus on a framework that combines the disciplines: molecular epidemiology, genomics and risk assessment modelling. •Ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary research group and in collaboration with scientists from several countries.
