Copenhagen Local/International Geoscience Ref.: MO-045994 Maersk Oil is offering a position as Senior Geophysicist in the Iraqi Kurdistan (Middle East/North Africa) Exploration team, based in our headquarters in Copenhagen. The team is responsible for all exploration work in and around our interests in Iraqi Kurdistan, ranging from play analysis, lead and prospect maturation to planning and drilling of exploratory wells. Our technical work is focused on • Regional geological and geophysical studies; • Prospect maturation; • Preparation for exploration bid rounds and support to farm-in and acquisition initiatives; • Identification and mapping of leads and prospects for exploration drilling opportunities, including risking, volumetric assessment and economic viability; • Planning of exploration drilling. The Iraqi Kurdistan Exploration team works closely with geosciences and engineering functions internally and operational geologists and engineers in the operations office in Erbil. Maersk Oil offers a competitive remuneration and social benefits package. Key Responsibilities You will be working as exploration geophysicist at senior level. The main objective of this position is to contribute to the development of a strong exploration portfolio in the Iraqi Kurdistan region and support the company’s growth plans in this area. Key responsibilities include structurally sound seismic interpretation, prospect maturation and integration exploration well results. More specifically the role entails: • Conduct regional studies to identify and evaluate the exploration potential and make recommendations on growth opportunities for the company; • Evaluate prospectivity in licensed areas and provide structurally sound seismic interpretation; • Depth conversion; • Integrating well data including VSP, checkshots and structural data; • Liaison with geologists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers; • Ensure prospect evaluations are of high quality through attendance at peer assists and reviews; • Support seismic acquisition planning, processing and re-processing projects; • Participate in partner meetings; • Technical networking and mentoring of younger staff; • Screening of possible farm-in opportunities; • Support to Exploration Business Plans. Who we are looking for As candidate for the position we expect you have a minimum of 8 years oil industry experience with a strong background in exploration geophysics. Moreover, we expect you will bring: • M.Sc. or higher degree in geophysicists or geoscience; • Significant experience in interpretation of structurally complex 2D (and 3D) seismic data; • Good understanding of depth conversion techniques and methods; • Experience in the structural geology of fold and thrust belts; • Experience of integrating VSP and checkshot data; • Experience with processing and re-processing techniques; • Work experience with geology in the Middle Eastern region; • Knowledge of fractured carbonate reservoirs; • Good working knowledge of probabilistic resource assessment methods and risking; • Ability to challenge the seismic data and look for methods and or latest geophysical characterisation techniques to improve our models; • Enthusiasm, good communication skills and ability to engage and motivate others; • Hands-on experience with exploration software packages (Petrel); • Fluency in English (spoken and written) Maersk Oil is an international oil and gas company with operated production of about 557,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from Denmark, the UK, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Brazil and Algeria.
