Two PhD scholarships in Fungal Genomics Driven Discovery and Synthetic Biology

Two positions as PhD students are open within Department of Systems Biology. The department is dedicated to the exploitation of biodiversity as a source of new chemical pathways and compounds; and, through the understanding of cell biology and physiology, use systems and synthetic biology to design advanced cell factories. The profile of the department comprises research groups with competences in mycology, molecular biology, analytical natural product chemistry, bioinformatics and fermentation technology. The overall aim and focus of the research project is to mine the many emerging Aspergillus genomes for orphan gene clusters encoding putative bioactive natural products such as aromatic polyketides, and to isolate and characterize the structures and bioactivities of such compounds. Responsibilities and tasks The two PhD students will complete their projects within the Natural Product Discovery and Eukaryotic Molecular Cell Biology Groups, respectively, and be enrolled in the PhD School at the Department of Systems Biology, DTU. The two PhD students will collaborate on genomics driven discovery, characterization and engineering of aromatic polyketide biosynthetic pathways. Both students will be involved in the bioinformatics aspects of the project while one student is expected to take the lead in the analytical chemistry work and the second in the molecular biology work. The strain construction work will be based on the most modern fungal genetic techniques including CRISPR/Casd9 and elaborate gene expression platforms. The analytical work will include UPLC-HRMS based compound identification and, when necessary, compound purification and NMR based structural elucidation. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Thomas O. Larsen and Professor Uffe H. Mortensen. In assessment of the applicants for the two positions, the following will be taken into consideration: •You must have a good command of English •Our research group work as a team and documentation of collaborative skills via recommendation letters will be advantageous Specifically for PhD student 1: •You are required to hold a master’s degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry or another related field. •Strong documentation for skills within analytical chemistry. •Experience with NMR-based structural elucidation of small molecules. •Experience with bioinformatics is an advantage, but not a must. Specifically for PhD student 2: •You are required to hold a master’s degree in molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, or another related field. •Strong documentation for skills within fungal molecular biology. •Documentation for skills within bioinformatics.
