Application date Sunday, February 1, 2015 - 23:59 Location Lyngby, Denmark Solid-state NMR studies of microporous aluminosilicate materials used as heterogeneous catalysts for synthesis of fuels and bulk chemicals. We offer an exciting PhD project conducted at the Instrument Centre for Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy, iNANO and Department of Chemistry, utilizing the excellent facilities for solid-state NMR research in inorganic materials science at this centre in close collaboration with Haldor Topsoe A/S. The Instrument Centre and Haldor Topsoe A/S has a long-standing collaboration on structural studies of zeolites and heterogeneous catalysts by solid-state NMR and the PhD project will be a part of this fruitful and productive work. In a post-oil society the production of transportation fuels and bulk chemicals will rely on alternative carbon sources, such as biomass, coal, natural gas, and CO2. Gasification and reforming of these sources to synthesis gas are mature technologies whereas the production of fuels and chemicals from this gas mixture is a very active research field, focusing on the development of new heterogeneous catalysts. Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicates built from corner-sharing SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. Constructing a zeolite framework exclusively from SiO4 tetrahedra results in a neutral structure, whereas the replacement of Si by Al will create a charge deficit that must be balanced by cations, and when these charge-balancing cations are H+, a material with Brønsted acid properties is obtained. In addition, zeolite framework structures include regularly shaped channels or pores of molecular dimensions that run through the materials. It is the presence of these micropores coupled with the possibility of introducing catalytically active sites within them that facilitates the widespread use of zeolites as shape-selective, acid catalysts in several industrial applications. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating structural properties of zeolites. This is mainly due to the ability of NMR to investigate different geometries and local orderings and to probe specific elements (1H, 13C, 29Si, 27Al) and their mutual connectivities on a short-range scale. The aim The PhD project is to utilize and further develop solid-state NMR techniques for obtaining new information about structural and catalytic properties of aluminosilicate-based catalysts. This will include identification and characterization of catalytic active sites, mechanistic studies of product formation in the zeolites, and investigations of the degradation of zeolite materials during the catalytic use. The latter leads to frequent catalyst replacement imposing limits on the total lifetime of the catalyst - a parameter which has an important influence on the industrial realization of the catalysts. Qualifications The PhD candidate should have a Master’s (3-year PhD program) or 4-years studies (4-year PhD program) in chemistry, nanoscience, physics, or materials science. Knowledge and experience with inorganic materials, heterogeneous catalysis or solid-state NMR will be considered as a plus. The Ph.D. stipend is available from Mai 1st, 2015 or later at the iNANOschool, the Faculty of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark in a joint project between iNANO and Haldor Topsoe A/S, Lyngby, Denmark.
