The Hearing Systems group at DTU Elektro seeks qualified candidates for two vacant 3-year PhD positions. The two projects are part of the Denmark-wide project “Better Hearing Rehabilitation (BEAR)” in collaboration with Aalborg University, University of Southern Denmark, Aalborg University Hospital, Odense University Hospital and Danish hearing-instrument manufacturers. Candidates are invited to apply for a specific project from the list below: Measures of aided hearing performance in real-life situations The aim of this project is to characterize objectively the issues of hearing-aid users, in which situations they have difficulties, how they perform with their hearing aids, and what could improve their hearing-aid benefit and experience. A test battery evaluating objective hearing-aid performance will be designed as part of the project. This battery will include tests of aided hearing (i.e., while wearing hearing aids) evaluating, e.g., audiometry, speech-in-noise performance, spatial hearing, listening effort, and sound quality. The focus of this project will be on evaluating the patients’ performance in realistic scenarios (with different types of reverberation, background noise, spatial distribution of interferers, etc.). Experiments with hearing-aid users will be conducted in both laboratory and clinical settings. The obtained hearing-aid performance data will be used to identify specific subgroups of users showing similar trends in their performance. The broader aim is to develop measures that can be used for patient follow-up and to evaluate systematically the quality of clinical hearing rehabilitation in Denmark. The PhD student will interact closely with other partners in the project. Model-based hearing-loss characterization and compensation The aim of this project is to identify insufficiencies in clinical hearing test batteries, currently heavily based on simple pure-tone and speech audiometry, and to develop new clinically applicable tests and fitting strategies to better characterize and compensate for individual hearing loss. Parameter spaces will be defined for a new clinical hearing profiling and hearing aid fitting strategy. The tasks will be to define what hearing capabilities need to be measured in the clinic (e.g., compression, spectro-temporal processing, binaural hearing, speech in noise reception, acceptable noise level, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem responses, cognitive function, etc.) and, based on this hearing-profile outcome, which parameters need to be adjusted in the prescribed hearing aid and in which way (e.g., gain, compression settings, number of channels, noise reduction settings, etc.). Auditory modelling will be used to guide parameter choice and adjustment of the fitting parameters as a function of hearing-profile parameters, by predicting the expected outcome in aided performance. Experiments with hearing-impaired listeners will be performed and the test battery implemented for clinical practice. The PhD student will interact closely with other partners in the project. Applicable for both PhD scholarships: Qualifications Candidates should have an MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering.
