PhD scholarship in Efficacy of Multi-Modal Biomaterial Scaffolds in a Lab-on-a-Chip Model of Parkinson's Diseases

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a position funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie project “BrainMatTrain” within the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union, starting September 1st 2016. The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 3 years (PhD student) and will be placed at the Dept. Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech), Technical University of Denmark. DTU Nanotech is a research institute at the Technical University of Denmark and represents a cross-disciplinary research environment where micro- and nanotechnology are applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines, e.g. mechanics, optics, chemistry, medical technologies, and biotechnology. BrainMatTrain is a four-year project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme (H2020- MSCA-ITN-2015) under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Initial Training Network and Grant Agreement No. 676408. The project focuses on the scale up, commercialisation and translation of functionalised biomaterial constructs for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The BrainMatTrain network comprises four academic institutes, two hospitals and two industry partners from seven European countries (Ireland, Austria, Sweden, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom). Responsibilities and tasks The intended PhD student will be a member of this multi-disciplinary team and will be responsible for establishing new technology for 3D microfabrication of scaffold structures and a Lab-on-a-Chip model of PD, which involves the following tasks: •Optimisation of functionalised biomaterial scaffolds •Investigation of mechanisms underlying neuronal death and protection after neurodegeneration in a lab on a chip model of PD. •Scaling up of the multi-component collagen scaffold The candidate must meet the following requirements: •Spend an external stay at the National University of Ireland, Galway during 6 months •Participate in training events for researchers and Principal Investigators involved in the program. •Reporting to the Project Manager which includes contributing to periodic scientific reports •Contributing to the reporting of project milestones and deliverables in accordance with EU deadlines •Promoting and disseminating results involved in the program, which includes contributing to newsletters and participating in outreach events •Willingness and ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering (or a similar degree) with a background in bioanalytical chemistry, biotechnology or medical technology. Relevant scientific background, including one but preferably several of the following: •Experience with hydrogels •Experience in developing bioanalytical microfluidic/flow assays •Experience with basic microfabrication techniques like casting, moulding and 3D printing. •Experience with tissue scaffolds •Experience with photochemistry Essential: •Less than 4 years full time equivalent research experience and not yet been awarded a doctoral degree (PhD) •Resided less than 12 months in Denmark in the 3 years prior to selection •Excellent communication and organisation skills •Fluent in spoken and written English •Excellent writing and presentation skills •Flexibility and ability to work in a team environment •Availability to travel nationally and internationally two to three times a year Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
